Garden 8
1964 Maroondah Highway, Buxton
Geoff and Jill Olive
The property was purchased 12 years ago
as an undeveloped section of farmland.
The site contained some remnant
Peppermint and Blackwood trees plus
swathes of Blackberries. Work began on
clearing and preparation for planting.
The aim was to develop a retirement
dream with an emphasis of native plants
for cut flowers and foliage plus create a
habitat for wildlife. All infrastructure had to
be installed. Every weekend was packed
with jobs to do.
Plants were grown from tube stock, many
raised from seed sourced on the property
or surrounds.
The garden was just taking shape as the
2009 bushfire exploded across our
district, we were not immune and many
trees and shrubs were lost. Replanting
around the house is now showing what can
be achieved in a short time and the
remaining trees have rebounded
beautifully.
The fruit trees and vegetable garden has
recovered and perennial plantings
continue to give form and colour to
selected areas. New plantings have not
filled in as yet but the broader landscape
plan is easily recognized.
The borrowed landscape is important to
the garden structure while quiet spaces for
relaxation, watching the birds and listening
to the frogs is just a few steps from the
door.
Morning and afternoon teas will be
available supporting a local organization.
